Pallets set on fire at Rossville Street in the Bogside last night by a mob of youths

PSNI officers came under attack from petrol bombs and missiles while attending the scene of a sudden death in Derry yesterday.

A 50-strong mob of masked youths pelted officers with bricks, paint, stones, bottles and petrol bombs as they were dealing the death of a woman in the Bogside’s Rossville Street.

Pallets were placed across Rossville Street and then set alight.

Police warned the public to avoid the area and also called in the assistance of its helicopter to try and identify those involved in the disturbance.
The rioting was condemned by local politiicians.

Sinn Fein councillor Patricia Logue said: “Police were dealing with a tragic incident involving the sudden death of a local person in the Bogside last night.

“A number of youths were causing disruption and anti-social behaviour in the surrounding area. This is only adding to the grief and shock felt by residents in the Bogside.
“I would appeal to parents to make it their business to ensure their children are not getting caught up in this type of activity.
“Even during the worst days of the conflict people in the community always let the police go about their job of investigation during incidents such as this.”
