IN a fascinating illustrated talk at the Tower Museum in Derry this week Robert Corbett will outline key milestones in the story of the RNLI around the Ulster coast since 1825. He will focus on lifeboats stations which were opened during the second half of the nineteenth century, including Portrush in Co. Antrim and Greencastle and Culdaff in Co. Donegal.Robert will explain why these stations were established and recall some of the individuals who managed or served on the lifeboats provided.
He will also describe some of the early rescues that were undertaken by these lifeboat crews, including on Lough Foyle, in lifeboats that were powered only by oar and sail.
Robert will then illustrate how the RNLI in Ulster was transformed in the early twentieth century following the arrival of the first motorised lifeboat in Ireland in 1910.
He will conclude by looking at the recent development of fast all-weather lifeboats and inshore rescue boats.
The story of the lifeboats around our coast is part of our rich maritime heritage, but unfortunately it has not received the attention it deserves. Robert’s talk attempts to redress this imbalance.
