Neil Heaney who tragically died at Belfast marathon on Monday

POLICE have confirmed the man who died after the Belfast City Marathon was Stephen Heaney from Limavady.

The 50-year-old collapsed at around mile 6 on Monday.

He’ll be laid to rest at a funeral service at Christ Church in Limavady on Friday.

In a funeral notice his loved ones have said Stephen was a “Much loved son of David and the late Pat, devoted father of Rebecca & Victoria” and he will be “lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his family and many friends.”

He leaves behind two daughters, Rebecca and Victoria.

Writing on Facebook, his daughter Victoria Heaney called him “a gentleman to everyone he crossed”.

“I hoped that today [Tuesday] I would have been congratulating you on completing your first marathon yesterday,” she wrote.

“God had other plans and decided to take away the best man of my life, a role model, through being a Dad, a supporter, a sports player and a gentleman to everyone he crossed.

“Rest easy Daddy, I love you so much and I’m so proud of you.”

A request has been made for family flowers only, with any donations going to Macmillan Cancer Support, c/o Browns Funeral Directors, 25 Church Street, Limavady.
