Detention of Derry republican Tony Taylor to be raised in the Seanad

Republican prisoner Tony Taylor incarcerated in Maghaberry prison calls for his immedidate release

SINN Féin Senator Niall Ó Donnghaile will raise the case of imprisoned Derry man, Tony Taylor in the Seanad today and repeat his party’s call for his immediate release.

Mr Taylor was thrown back in prison in March 2016 on the word of MI5.

As a result, his released licence was revoked and he was arrested by the PSNI and taken back into custody to Maghaberry prison where he has remained every since.

He has yet to be told why he was returned. All his legal team have found out is that it was following a recommendation by the then British Secretary of State Theresa Villiers to the Parole Commissioners.

Last week, Mr Taylor called on the public and politicians to support his campaign for him to be released immediately.

Seanadóir O Donnghaile said: “It is now over two years from Tony Taylor’s arrest and subsequent imprisonment.

“Tony’s continued detention is wrong and is a violation of his human rights.

“Sinn Féin has consistently stated that if evidence exists to show that Tony Taylor is a risk to the public, it should be put before him and his legal team in an open court so that this can be challenged.

“Over the course of the past two years, the British government has failed to produce any evidence which could in any way justify his continued detention.

“I am calling on the Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney and the Irish government to clarify what engagement they have had with the British government regarding the Tony Taylor case and to state whether they have asserted their dissatisfaction in relation to his case.

“Sinn Féin will continue to raise this matter with both the Irish and British governments until Tony Taylor is released,” he added.
