A security alert is continuing in the Brandywell area of Derry after a suspect device was found at the home of the parents of a serving PSNI officer.

It is the third security alert in the city in 24 hours.

The Lone Moor Road is currently closed following the discovery of a suspicious device.

Army Technical Officers have carried out a controlled explosion on the object.

It is the second such attack in the city over the last 24 hours on the parents of a serving police officer.

A number of diversions are in place in the area.

Police Federation, which represents rank and file officers, has called on all political parties to speak with one voice to condemn the dissident republicans behind the intimidation of the families of serving Officers in Derry.

“These actions are reprehensible and cowardly. They are attempts to intimidate, bully and terrorise and all of us – politicians, community and police – must stand up to these mindless thugs,” said PFNI Chair Mark Lindsay.

“I would ask all our political parties to express their outright disgust at these tactics and to work with the police to rid us of this scourge.

“In some instances, elderly people are being intimidated and frightened. The community has to turn its back on these dissident no-hopers and tell them bluntly to get off their backs.”

On Wednesday residents in the Shantallow area were evacuated from their homes after an object was discovered at the home of the parents of a serving PSNI officer.

The object was examined by army bomb experts and declared an elaborate hoax.

On Wednesday night police attended the scene of a security alert at Inishowen Gardens in Derry following the report of a suspicious object.

A number of streets were closed, and homes evacuated, whilst the object was examined the army bomb squad.

The object was also declared an elaborate hoax.

Chief Inspector Alan Hutton asked anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area or who has any information which could assist with enquiries to call police in Strand Road on 101 quoting reference number 1460 02/05/18.

Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous.
