SINN Féin’s Elisha McCallion and party colleague Pearse Doherty TD will meet the South’s Transport Minister Shane Ross today to discuss the need for progress on the A5 Derry-Dublin road project.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, the Foyle MP said she would be pressing Minister Ross on the importance of this infrastructure project to the North West Region.

She commented: “Pearse Doherty and I will be meeting with Shane Ross in Leinster House today (Thursday) to press him on the need for progression on the A5.

“As part of the Irish Government’s National Planning Framework, the A5 features as a key infrastructure project which will connect the North West City Region to rest of the island.

“The A5 complemented by the ongoing A6 Derry to Belfast route are the two flagship projects that will be the economic enablers this long neglected region so desperately need to unlock its potential.

“For the first time, all the major stakeholders in the region are speaking with a united voice to both Governments in regards to what is needed to take the North West forward. I am proud to be playing my part, alongside my party colleagues and civic leaders in Derry, Donegal and Tyrone in that conversation.”

The Irish Government have committed capital funding for the Letterkenny to Dublin section of the A5 through their ‘Project Ireland 2040’ National Planning Framework and the Foyle MP has said that she will continue to pursue the British Government to provide funding through their ‘City Deal’ scheme.

“To date we have seen failure and bad faith from the British Government in relation to funding for the North West.

“I will continue to use my position to critically engage with Karen Bradley and now James Brokenshire as the Minister charged with the ‘City Deal’ delivery in relation to funding through the ‘City Deal’ scheme.

“This is a key component part of the Inclusive Growth Deal that this region requires to fund the Strategic Growth Plan as agreed by all Stakeholders in the North West City Region.”
