McKnight welcomes consultation on mobile phone penalties

SINN Féin Councillor Caoimhe McKnight has welcomed plans to increase penalties for motorists who use mobile phones while driving.

She was commenting after the Department of Infrastructure launched a consultation on proposals that would see the current sanction more than double to a £200 fine and six penalty points.

“We welcome the recent consultation published by the Department for Infrastructure which would increase the penalties for those people that use mobile phones while driving,” said the Derry councillor.

“If an initiative like this can reduce the possibility of another road collision then it should be supported.

“Every collision and death on our roads is one too much. It causes pain and misery for families of the victims.

“That is why road safety is something that we will continuously push forward.

“Our roads can be a hazardous enough place without people being distracted by their mobiles and so we feel this consultation and proposed changes are another step in the right direction towards.”
