POLICE have charged a youth with handling stolen goods and interfering with motor vehicles.

He will face Derry Magistrates’ Court on Friday morning, February 23, for a first remand hearing.

He was arrested earlier todday following a tip off from a local dog walker who helped officers catch the youth for trying to break into cars and homes in Derry.

The teenager was later arrested for attempted theft of homes and trying to break into cars.

He was taken to Strand Road police station for questioning.

Tonight, police say on the PSNI Foyle Facebook page: “Further update: this male has been charged with handling stolen goods and interference with vehicles and will be appearing in court tomorrow morning.

“Thanks agiain to the community for their help.”

Police had previously praised the dog walker for alerting them to the youth.

An earlier Facebook posting from police in Derry read: “Thanks to an eagle eyed dog walker officers from Ballyarnett NPT and LPT located a male youth who had been reported attempting to break into homes and vehicles in the Foylesprings area.

“A good old fashioned search was conducted and some suspicious items were found in his pockets which meant that he was arrested for theft and vehicle interference allowing him to check into Hotel Strand Road in time to receive the early bird rate and who knows prevent further crimes.

“With your help we can catch these criminals red handed so pick up the phone and contact us if you see anything suspicious.

“We are more than happy to come and take these people away.”
