Sinn Fein councillor Eric McGinley calls foraction over street lighting problems
SINN Féin Councillor Eric McGinley has expressed concern at the delay in replacing street lights in the Ballymagroarty and Hazelbank areas.
Cllr. McGinley said: “A number of months ago I reported in excess of 50 street lights which required replacing across the Ballymagroarty and Hazelbank areas.
“It is a matter of some concern that a number of these bulbs have not been replaced despite the length of time which has elapsed.
“Having raised the issue again I was informed by Street Lighting officials that the contractor had run out of the particular stock of light bulbs required and was having difficulty sourcing replacements.
“Given the increase in burglaries in recent times the lack of street lighting in these areas not only adds to the worry for residents but makes it easier for criminals to carry out their illegal activities.
“I have asked Street Lighting to consider whether it would be more practical to initiate a programme of replacing lamp standards entirely if this helped to avoid a repeat of the current situation.
“A similar programme was put in place a couple of years ago on the bus route in Ballymagroarty and was warmly welcomed by the community.
“Whatever the solution may be Street Lighting need to respond as a matter if urgency,” he added.
