THE Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for high winds for the next 48 hours.

As a result, Derry City and Strabane District Council has urged the public to be safe and take the necessary precautions to secure their properties over the New Year period.

Officials say that there is a potential for damage to buildings such as tiles blown from roofs and debris.

In view of the weather warning, the Council has advised that St Columb’s Park. Brooke Park, Claudy Country Park and Bay Road Park will be closed to the public from this morning, New Year’s Eve, Sunday, December 31. for health and safety reasons.

The closures  be reviewed during the course of the day and following inspections by Council staff.

All other sites will be open as normal so long as it is safe to do so and will be monitored on an ongoing basis.

The Council have urtged the public not to go near downed trees, Christmas lights and other fallen material and to report to the Council directly via [email protected] or Tel. 07718 695 014.
