DERRY City and Strabane District Council is encouraging shoppers in the North West to support the Strabane Christmas Fayre that is set to take place in Strabane Town Centre on Sunday, December 3 from 1 pm to 6 pm.The initiative is organised by the Strabane Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership with financial support from Derry City and Strabane District Council and features local businesses and local food and craft market stalls.
In addition to the late night shopping offering there will be musical entertainment with local school choirs and St Joseph’s Brass Band, as well as theatrical performances and lots of children’s entertainment such as storytelling and arts and crafts.
There will be a number of stages located throughout the town showcasing local talent and providing a wide range of musical genres for the public to enjoy and to add to the festive atmosphere.
Among the performers set to take to the stage will be the Wailin Banshees, the Strabane Brass Band, the David Oliver Band, Nineteen 80 Something, Darren Doherty and the Heathen Choir, the Guvnors, the Jazz Gazette Trip and Craic as well as a range of solo artists and local school choirs.
Other events taking place to enhance the experience for families will be a Christmas Movie at the Alley Theatre at 2.00pm with all proceeds going to the Mayor’s Charity AWARE.
The Butcher Street Car Park will play host to a Dog Christmas Jumper Competition at 1.30pm while a Crafts for Seniors event will take place at Market Street.
Keep an eye out for Santa Claus, Mrs Claus and their helpers who will be roaming about throughout the day and encouraging families to take part on arts and crafts, storytelling and entertainment taking place all afternoon.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Councillor Maolíosa McHugh says the Strabane Christmas Fayre is an excellent way of showcasing local produce and encouraging people to shop local.
“This promises to be a great family event and the perfect way to start the festive season.
“Not only will you be able to get lots of unique Christmas gifts, but you can sample some local produce and get to meet Santa, as well as enjoy some lovely Christmas carols and meet up with family and friends.
“It’s a great way of experiencing a traditional Christmas Fayre while at the same time supporting local businesses and craft producers as well as hearing local performers and bands and school choirs showcasing their talents.
“I am really looking forward to the event and to seeing the local community come out to support the event and shop local,” he added.
Extending his thanks to the organisers of the event and to those who are taking part, the Mayor said he is confident it will be another great success for everyone involved.
