On the run murderer Stephen Henry now back in custody after being recaptured

A MAN who murdered his victim with a Samurai-style sword is back in custody after failing to return to a Co Derry jail.

Stephen Henry, 41, did not return to Magilligan Prison on Monday, after he was issued a day-release pass to visit his family.

Henry was jailed for murdering father-of-two John Cooke in Lisburn in 2004.

He could not face fresh criminal charges for escaping lawful custody and failing to return under the terms of his day release.

On Friday, Henry face a court in Dublin after he was arrested by Gardai for a public order offence.

Henry was so drunk he could hardly keep his eyes open during proceedings.

The defendant was fined €75 as the offence does not carry a custodial sentence.

He was released because a European Arrest Warrant (EAW) had not been issued.

The PSNI said Henry was arrested in Waringstown in Co Armagh at 11.25 pm on  Friday night and remains in police custody being questioned..

After he did not return to prison on Monday, the PSNI appealed for information into his whereabouts and urged Henry to hand himself in to the authorities without further delay.

However, he crossed the border on Tuesday and was picked up by the Gardaí in Dublin on Friday.
