TORY BREXIT AGENDA THREATENS MEDICAL RESEARCH – ANDERSON

SINN Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said the Tory Brexit agenda poses a significant risk to medical research.

Martina Anderson said: “Increased co-operation in medical research across the EU has brought advances in the development and availability of new drugs and treatments which have ultimately improved patient care.

“A new report from the British Medical Association shows that such co-operation is now in jeopardy as a result of Brexit.

“The impact of the Tory Brexit agenda would significantly limit the ability of researchers and institutions across the EU to work together.

“The loss of EU funding could also impact on the development of new medicines and clinical trials which could delay access to potentially life-saving new treatments.

“Huge advances have been made in medical research in the north in recent years and this could be lost if the north is dragged out of the EU against our will.

“But there is a way to avoid this and to continue to support medical research and that is by securing special status for the north within the EU.”
