SERIOUS ASSAULT: ROADS STILL SHUT AS POLICE CONTINUE PROBE INTO DERRY ATTACK

PARTS of Derry City Centre are still closed this afternoon while police and forensic teams comb the scene of an assault for clues to the attackers.

A police spokesperson said: “We have now been able to open Orchard Street from Ferryquay Street but it is still closed coming up from Foyle Street.

“The Millenium Forum can be accessed from the side entrance on the east wall near the Central Library and Bank Place.

“All other diversions remain.

“Thank you for your continued cooperation, it is appreciated.”

Detectives continue to appeal for witnesses to the serious assault in Newmarket Street in Derry during the early hours of this morning.

Shortly after 2am police received a report of an altercation between a number of males on Newmarket Street.

A male, aged in his 30s, sustained serious injuries to his head after he had been assaulted by a number of the males.

He has been taken to the accident and emergency department at Altnagelvin Hospital for treatment to his head injuries.

Detectives are appealing for anyone who was in the area of Newmarket Street during the early hours of this morning and who witnessed the incident or anyone with any information that can assist with the investigation to contact detectives in Strand Road on 101 quoting reference 209 22/10/2017.
