SDLP LEADER CALLS FOR ACTION ON TONY TAYLOR CASE

Derry republican prisoner Tony Taylor who is languishing behind bars in Maghaberry jail

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood MLA and Councillor Brian Tierney have met with Tony Taylor, the Derry man imprisoned in Maghaberry without charge.

Mr Taylor was arrested at his home in Derry in March 2016 and returned to Maghaberry Prison.
It followed a decision by the then Secretary of State Theresa Villiers to revoke his licence based on the word of MI5 spooks.

Speaking after jailhouse meeting , Mr Eastwood said:

“I have raised the issue of the ongoing imprisonment of Derry man Tony Taylor with two Secretaries of State.

“To date, authorities have provided no credible evidence to support Mr Taylor’s continued detention.

“If any such evidence exists, it should be presented in open court and Mr Taylor given the right to defend himself.

“The fact that this has not yet happened is deeply worrying.

“We have built a society here that respects the principle of the rule of law.

“That principle applies as much to the state as it does to individuals. No purpose is served through the actions taken against Mr Taylor to date.

“I am again calling on the Secretary of State to intervene.

“Either evidence should be presented in this case or Mr Taylor must be released,” added the Foyle MLA.
