A FORMER teacher of murdered Jordan McConomy has paid a glowing tribute to the student he once taught.

Jordan was murdered in the early hours of Sunday morning during what police describe as an “altercation” in the William Street area of the city.

The 19-year-old former pupil at St Brigid’s High School in Derry was rushed by ambulance to Altnagelvin Hospital but tragically died of his injuries.

Detectives from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team later launched a murder inquiry.

Around lunchtime on Sunday, an 18-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of murdering Jordan.

He remains in custody at Strand Road police station.

On Monday, Derry Daily reported how Jordan’s heartbroken girlfriend had posted pictures on her Facebook of the couple together.

In a moving message, Leah Kelly wrote: “The most perfect human being ever, love of my life x.”

In response to Leah’s message, retired teacher Harry Sharkey replied: “RIP Jordan – one of the kindest people I ever had the privilege of teaching when I was in St Brigid’s.

“Thoughts & prayers are with his family at this very hard time.

“God rest his gentle soul.”

There has been a huge outpouring of grief by friends of both Jordan and Leah over his senseless murder.

There has been a large number of messages of support expressed to Jordan’s heartbroken family.

Derry priest Fr Michael Canny said the teenager’s family was “in bits” following the tragedy.

“A son, a brother a family member was now dead as a result of an altercation or whatever happened in William Street a few hours earlier.

“It’s the most dreadful news.

“And it’s devastating news and it’s news that all parents who have children out socialising must dread,” he added. .

Fr Canny said Mr McConomy’s family described him as a typical teenager who had a passion for cars.
