THIS Friday arts lovers up and down the country are preparing for a busy evening showcasing the talents of a wide range of performers from the local arts scene, as Culture Night 2017 gets underway.
Over 40 free events will be taking place locally celebrating the diverse cultural offering of the North West with some entertaining and challenging events on the menu to suit every taste.
Mayor of Derry and Strabane Councillor Maolíosa McHugh, encouraged people to come out and have a fantastic evening supporting local artists.
“This year’s programme features a wide range of cultural events, all free to attend, so it’s the perfect opportunity to try something new,” he stressed.
“We have a rich and vibrant arts scene here in the North West, and while we are so often acknowledged for our musical talent, there are many other facets to our cultural heritage.
“This year there is a strong emphasis on the built heritage which makes our city so special, with some unusual venues, and an exploration of some of our most fascinating places and spaces.
“There will also be the opportunity on the night to give your thoughts on the European Capital of Culture 2023 bid, and what your aspirations are for an exciting and transformational cultural programme for the region.”
As well as showcasing highlights of the contemporary art scene, Culture Night this year also celebrates the heritage which has shaped our cultural identity.
Why not take the opportunity to find out more about some of the fascinating archaeological and architectural features of the City with the Walled City Unravelled Walking Tour?
Or explore some the city’s most impressive historical buildings such as the Playhouse, St Columb’s Cathedral, St Augustine’s Church and Christ Church as they play host to an eclectic mix of events.
Sample a taste of the past at the Tower Museum with cuisine from the 16th and 17th century, and find out more about the city’s shirt factory heritage at the Fashion and Textile Design Centre.
Looking ahead to Friday’s events, Arts and Culture Manager with Derry City and Strabane District Council, John Kerr, said: “This year we have been delighted by the response from the local arts community who really see the value in showcases such as Culture Night.
“The programme features exhibitions, panel discussions, live music, drama and plenty of material which will provoke debate around the arts as well as entertain and amuse. It’s a chance to meet the artists in smaller more personal spaces, and to enjoy new cultural experiences in some unusual venues. I hope everyone comes out to show their support.”
