THE family of the late and much loved runner Marty Gallagher are offering a substantial cash prize in a running event launched in his memory.

Marty was killed in 2009 by a drunk death driver, devastating his family and friends at such loss of a young life.

Next month, on Sunday, October 1, Marty’s Run 5 Km run and walk will take place.

Foyle Valley Athletics Club say: “This is the eighth year of the event which is in memory of Marty Gallagher, a much respected and gifted member of Foyle Valley Athletics Club who lost his life tragically in 2009.

“This year the 5000th runner will cross the finish line and the Gallagher family has decided to give a substantial cash prize to that lucky person.

“Eight was Marty’s lucky number so it is fitting it should happen on the eighth year of his race.

“The huge number who consistently turn out for this event is testament to the many friends that Marty had. Marty made a big impression on anyone who got to know him.

Over 750 runners and walkers took part in the event in 2016 and proceeds from the race were donated to local charities.

“Starting opposite St Brigids College, Glengalliagh Road, at 11am on Sunday 1st October the route will go along the Glengalliagh Road, turn left down the Skeoge Road and left again at the Buncrana Road to finish at Templemore Sports Complex.

“Registration will be at Templemore Sports Complex: –
12 noon – 4 pm Saturday 30th September and
9 am-10.30 am Sunday 1st October.

“The race itself will start at 11 am.

“As large numbers are expected the organisers would like as many people as possible to register on the Saturday to avoid any delays on Sunday morning.

“Competitors should allow approx 15 minutes to walk/jog from Templemore Sports Complex to the start at St Brigids College.

“Martin Gallagher senior will act as starter for both the run and the walk.

“The walkers getting away just after the runners.

Tragic Martin Gallagher killed by drunk death driver in 2009.

“The race fee is £10 and each entrant will receive a commemorative t-shirt, medal and a snack at the finish of the course.

“There will be prizes for the usual run categories and a perpetual trophy for the first male and female runners.

“Chip timing, Great prizes, Post-race massages, music and a fantastic family atmosphere all make this a great draw for the competitive runner and those looking to get a personal best or just to enjoy the fantastic achievement of doing a 5K.

“Please register early to avoid delays!”
