A WOMAN tragically killed in a traffic incident on the outskirts of Derry early yesterday morning has been named locally as Patricia Campbell.

The 48-year-old was walking back from a hotel where a fundraising event was held for local victims of the recent flood when tragedy struck.

Ms Campbell was hit by a vehicle along the Glenshane Road near the village of Drumhoe, where she is understood to have lived.

Police continue to appeal for information over her death.

Local resident and DUP councillor Hilary McClintock said news of the death was a great shock.

“I was deeply saddened to hear that another life has been lost on our roads,” said the former mayor of the city.

“It is heartbreaking for any family to lose someone they love under any circumstances, but a sudden and unexpected death like this is especially tough.

“My thoughts and prayers are with her family at this very sad time,” said the former Mayor of Derry.

Following the collision, the road was closed for a period while the PSNI’s Collision investigation Branch examined the scene to determine the cause of the accident.

PSNI Inspector Gregory Smyth said: “We would like to hear from anyone who witnessed this collision.

“If you have any information that could help with our investigation, please contact police at Strand Road on 101, quoting reference 117 of 18/9/17.”
