SINN Féin Foyle MLA Karen Mullan has is calling for more advice and guidance to be given to students to help prevent them from becoming hooked on gambling..
The party’s Assembly Education spokesperson was speaking after reports from the Gambling Commission show that some students have £10,000 gambling debts.
She said: “The Gambling Commission findings are deeply concerning.
“Gambling is a problem throughout society as a whole but the student population is particularly vulnerable.
“Students are often targeted by online gambling promotions and gambling stalls are set up at some fresher’s fairs.
“This type of aggressive marketing is leading to more people, and especially younger people, becoming involved in gambling.
“Students receive their student loans and have to budget their money in a way they are unlikely to have done before.
“Gambling could be viewed by students as a means of getting more money quickly and as a way of dealing with stress and pressure.
“Gambling, and online gambling in particular, is increasingly a cause for concern. More action is needed to minimise risks; students and indeed the public in general, should be educated around gambling and the dangers that exist with it.
“Everyone must be made aware of the help and advice that is available for those affected by gambling.”
