PERMISSION has been granted for a number of new homes in both Derry and Strabane at a meeting of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Planning Committee.

Planners approved a number of developments during the meeting which was the first to take place at the Guildhall since the summer recess.

Members agreed with the recommendation to approve planning application LA11/2015/0362/F for the retention of nine detached dwellings at former sites 16-29 Glenview Manor, Strabane by Strabane Developments Limited.

Members also welcomed the approval of planning application LA11/2016/1022/F for the erection of 16 semi-detached dwellings at lands at Copperthorpe within housing zoning H25 for Braidwater Ltd.

The Committee also agreed the approval of full planning permission and Listed Building Consent for the change of use of vacant first and second floor museum space to provide six new duplex apartments for RV Properties Ltd under applications LA11/2016/0355/F & LA11/2016/0363/LBC.

The site is the Grade B2 listed workhouse building which houses the Waterside Library and the former Workhouse Museum.

Finally it was agreed that a former derelict schoolhouse site located on land at Fir Road in Ballyarnett will be redeveloped to provide space for a new residential housing development, (LA11/2016/0232/O).

The outline application by Karl Hargan was approved by the committee for a proposed development of 16 houses, consisting of 10 semi-detached and 6 detached dwellings.

Welcoming the decisions, Chair of the Planning Committee Councillor Dan Kelly said the provision of good quality housing was a key priority for Council. “I am delighted to see these applications proceeding to the next stage of development.

“The creation of additional housing and the enhancement of our local communities are key priorities of Council’s Community Plan and the Local Development Plan.

“The Planning Service are working to support local developers in the delivery of appropriate developments to suit local housing need, and exploring ways of not only facilitating new builds, but also regenerating existing vacant spaces to ensure all our available properties are fully utilised.”
