HAVE A SPLASHING TIME WITH KICKSTART’S WATER SPORTS COURSES

DERRY City and Strabane District Council are offering local unemployed people the opportunity to earn qualifications in a number of different water sports disciplines as part of the latest intake of their Kickstart to Work scheme’s Maritime Ambassador Programme.

The courses in angling, powerboating and canoeing are free of charge and open to anyone, although they may be of particular interest to people who enjoy the outdoors.

Participants have the option of being trained in one, two or all three disciplines.

The angling course will be hosted at the well stocked trout ponds at the Loughs Agency in Prehen while powerboating and canoeing courses will take place further up the Foyle in the picturesque surroundings of Moville, County Donegal.

Project Officer at Derry City and Strabane District Council, Geraldine O hEara, encouraged unemployed people within the Council area to consider the courses, no matter what their previous experience of water sports.

“We are blessed with fantastic waterways including the River Foyle, Lough Foyle and a beautiful coastline so the opportunity to get to know these places whilst learning new practical watersports skills in stunning surroundings and under the watchful supervision of experienced coaches is a great opportunity,” she said.

“The courses are completed in a relaxed, fun environment and usually have a mix of people who are completely new to the sports and those with some experience.

“All transport, training equipment, clothing and food is provided.

“For those with no previous experience in any of the activities, participants will receive full training before progressing on to becoming qualified Assistant Coaches in the activity of their choice.”

Candidates for the training must be over 18, unemployed, reside in the Council area and not currently taking part in any other education or training programmes.

For more information on how to apply for the course contact Geraldine O’hEara at 028 71 308466 [email protected] or Michael Cosgrove at 028 71 342100 [email protected].
