Police at Strand Road appeal for information after man shot four times by dissident republican gunmen

POLICE in Derry have condemned the shooting of a 33-year-old man by four “coward” masked men.

The dissident republican paramilitary style gun attack happened in the Bogside’s Lisfannon Park last night around 9 30 pm.

The 33-year-old was rushed to Altnagelvin  hospital after he was shot three times in the legs and once in the abdomen.

Fortunately, his injuries were described as serious but not life threatening.

Police in Foyle have condemned the incident as “barbaric.”

Posted on the PSNI Foyle Facebook page they said:

“A young man was shot in our city last night.

“He was made to lie down in an alleyway and was shot four times – one of those shots went into his abdomen

“In today’s society how can anyone see this as anything else but barbaric? This isn’t justice.

“This is not the price our young people should have to pay because cowards in masks believe the have been wronged in some way.

“Tell us. Tell Crimestoppers. Our city and our people deserve better.”

Sinn Fein MLA Karen Mullan also condemned the attack.

“The people of Bogside do not want these actions taking place on their streets,” she said.

“Its clear those responsible have nothing to offer society and are at war with the community.

“There can be no justification for such actions and I would encourage anyone with information about this incident to bring it forward to the police.”

Detective Sergeant Phelan said: “We believe four masked men were involved in this brutal and horrific attack and we would ask for the community’s help in identifying those individuals.

“Anyone with information can contact detectives at Strand Road on 101 quoting reference number 1346 08/08/17.

“Alternatively the Crimestoppers charity can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
