MUSIC lovers can enjoy a taste of some light lunchtime bites of entertainment throughout August designed to whet the appetite for the forthcoming Organ Festival which takes place in Derry’s stunning Guildhall this October.
It’s the perfect opportunity for the public to get a sneak preview of what to look forward to at the festival as well as hear the Guildhall organ live in action.
Two accomplished local musicians will be taking to the stage over the coming weeks to showcase the instrument, which is the second largest concert organ in N. Ireland, dating back to 1891.
The organ now takes pride of place dominating the stage of the Main Hall as part of the £10 million restoration project in the Guildhall.
The Organ Festival, which is the first if its kind staged at the Guildhall, will run from October 19-21, and is supported by the Royal College of Organists and The Honourable the Irish Society and association with Viscount Organs.
Museum & Visitor Service Manager Margaret Edwards said she hoped the lunchtime events would draw new audiences to enjoy something a bit different at the venue.
“We are delighted to be hosting our first Organ Festival this autumn, and the lunchtime recitals are a great way of bringing organ music to new listeners,” she explained.
“The events are free and will offer the chance for people to call in on their lunch hour for some light entertainment.
“I think audiences will be surprised at the quality of the music and we hope that we will also attract young people, who may never have heard live organ music before, to the events.
“It’s also a great opportunity to have a look round the beautiful Guildhall – everyone is welcome.”
The lunchtime performances will take place on the following dates from 1pm – 3pm: Thursday 3rd August; Wednesday 9th August; Wednesday 16th August; Thursday 24th August; Thursday 31st August.
