MAYOR of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr Maolíosa McHugh has welcomed the announcement today that 125 civil service jobs are to be created in Derry.

The news comes after the Department for Communities (DFC) won a £7m contract to deliver Universal Credit Services to claimants in England, Scotland and Wales.

Welcoming the announcement the Mayor said: “This is fantastic news for Derry and the wider North West region and will be a huge boost to the local economy.

“I am confident that while some of the jobs will be filled through internal recruitment that the vast majority of them will be new posts for the city and region.

“As a city and region we are committed to developing our economy and locating civil service posts to the region is a great opportunity for us to promote the region as a good place to do business.

“These are high quality jobs that reflect the quality of our city’s offering in terms of skills base and creates  new jobs and opportunities for all our citizens, in particular our large and growing population of well educated young people,” added the Mayor.
