A musical celebration of the District’s rich cultural tapestry will take place next week in Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin, with a special evening of Irish and Arabic music.

The event will take place on Thursday July 6th at the Great James Street venue, offering people the chance to find out more about different cultures and traditions.

The event will commence at 7pm and those attending will have the chance to sample some delicious Arabic food as well as enjoy an extravaganza of Irish and Arabic singing, music and dancing.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, Councillor Maolíosa McHugh, encouraged people to go along to enjoy the Celtic-Arabic fusion.

“The evening promises an opportunity not only to enjoy a good night out but to learn more about these two very different cultures.

“Council is committed to promoting inclusion and equality for everyone and events such as this bring people together and help build relations between the many different communities who share our Council area.

“To achieve equality we must first build acceptance of our differences and identify our shared interests and values through promoting understanding and awareness.

“Music is one language we all understand and this is a great opportunity to enjoy performances by some very skilled artists from around the world, so I would encourage everyone to go along.”

A wide variety of cultural experiences will be on offer, with music, song, dancing and traditional cuisine all on the menu.

Special guests on the night include Syrian artist Mostafa Algedoaa who is now based in Derry. Mostafa will be sharing his passion for Dabke dancing, an Arab folk dance native to the Levant countries.

He will be joined by Syrian singer Mohamad Alaya and his band, also now based in the city.

Showcasing the homegrown traditions will be local musicians Eadaoin and Aidan Carlin, a family group dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the traditional Irish arts.

They play regular concerts and sessions in Derry and beyond.

Local performer Audrey Doherty will also be taking to the stage to reveal more about the art of Arabic Dance displaying a wide range of dance styles from North Africa and the Middle East.

If you wish to attend this event please RSVP to Pauline O’Neill at Derry City and Strabane District Council by email [email protected] or telephone 028 7125 3253 ext 8221
