THE Alley Theatre in Strabane will be showcasing the work of local artist Norah McGuinness next week as part of the Your City, Your Art programme.
The series offers people the opportunity to view artwork from the art collection of the National Museums NI and the Tower Museum in Derry and to learn more about their origins.
The workshops are open to anyone, and participants will gain a unique, personal insight into the work of some of the most influential artists hailing from the region.
Two paintings by the acclaimed Derry born artist and illustrator Norah McGuinness (1901-1980) will be taken out of storage for the morning and put on display in the theatre on Thursday June 29th, 10.30am – 11.30am.
Famed for her vibrant landscapes, McGuinness was a leading figures in the Irish modern movement in Ireland and co-founder of the Irish Exhibition of Living Art in 1943.
Curator of the Tower Museum, Roisin Doherty, said: “Your City, Your Art offers the opportunity for people to access and learn more about works from the art collection of the National Museums Northern Ireland and our own collection here at the Tower Museum.
“The pieces are put on display and discussed in an open forum, which allows both art enthusiasts and those new to art, to reflect on the works and hear more about the artist, their life and their motivation. You don’t have to have any previous knowledge and we hope that by giving more access to publicly owned art collections it will change perceptions.”
The series of workshops form part of the Creative Community Connections project, funded by Esmee Fairbairn, and organised by National Museums NI in partnership with Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Museum and Visitor Service.
The Your City, Your Art event is free and no previous booking is required for this open session.
