THE new Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, Cllr Maolíosa McHugh, during his first morning in office, joined local people in observing a minute’s silence outside the Guildhall today to remember the victims of the recent terror attack on London Bridge.
A Book of Condolence was also opened by the Mayor at the Guildhall for anyone who wishes to express their personal condolences to the families of those killed on Saturday evening.
Seven people were killed in the attack, and 48 injured as three men ploughed into crowds on London Bridge in a van before randomly targeting people out for the evening in Borough Market.
Mayor McHugh extended his personal condolences and those of local citizens across the district to the families of the seven people who lost their lives.
“I speak on behalf of everyone here in Derry and Strabane when I say that our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims of the latest atrocity in London at the weekend – and I want to extend my best wishes to all those still recovering from the attack.
“It is a sad first action as First Citizen to open a Book of Condolence and sad also that it will sit beside a Book of tributes for the people of Manchester opened less than a fortnight ago.
“I would encourage everyone to take the opportunity to sign the Books and show their support for all those whose lives have been changed forever by these terrible incidents.”
The Book of Condolence will remain open over the coming weeks, and there will also be an online facility where people can record tributes available on the Council’s website from 5 pm today www.derrystrabane.com
