ANDERSON WELCOMES RULING ON PLAIN PACKAGING FOR TOBACCO

SINN Féin MEP Martina Anderson has welcomed a Supreme Court ruling on plain packaging for cigarettes and tobacco products.

Ms Anderson said: “This ruling from the Supreme Court on the tobacco industry’s appeal over plain packaging is very welcome.

“At every turn the tobacco industry has tried every legal avenue to block plain packaging but this ruling now means it will be fully legally enforceable by May 20.

“Any measures which prevent young people from taking up this deadly habit are a positive.

“Hopefully this will lead to a reduction in the number of people who die from smoking every year.”
