DUP AND UUP MEPs HAVE LET DOWN PEOPLE OF THE NORTH – ANDERSON

SINN Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said the north’s unionist MEPs have let down the majority who voted to remain in the EU.

Martina Anderson said: “Yesterday in the European Parliament 516 MEPs from across Europe voted for a joint resolution which seeks to protect the interests of the people of the North during the Brexit negotiations.

“The resolution contained reference to protecting the Good Friday Agreement in all its parts, recognising the unique circumstances the north faces as a result of Brexit and calls for no hardening of the border on Ireland.

“MEPs with differing political views came together to support this resolution.

“Sadly the north’s two unionist MEPs could not bring themselves to support it.

“In doing so they have let down the majority of voters in north who voted to remain in the EU and have also let down those in our agriculture industry, our community sector and people from all walks of life.

“This is not the first time they have voted against the interests of the people of the north on Brexit.

“In the aftermath of the referendum 540 MEPs voted to maintain PEACE funding post-Brexit and once again their names were absent from the list.

“Clearly they are more concerned with reinforcing partition than the economy of the north or the wellbeing of its people.

“Sinn Féin will continue to build on the support we have in Europe for our case for designated special status for the north within the EU.”
