DERRY City and Strabane District Council has set a out a code of practice policy for all CCTV cameras operated by council in an effort to crack down on down illegal dumping and dog fouling.
The news has been welcomed by local Sinn Féin Councillor Mickey Cooper who has been highlighting the issue of fly tipping and dog fouling.
He said “I welcome this initiative by the council. Its comes a result of over a year of work I have been involved in with council officers.
“It’s envisaged that once it’s adopted the council will, amongst other things, be able to install cameras and signage in Rosemount and other areas affected by illegal dumping and dog fouling.
“This will provide both a visual deterrent and also better enforcement options against offenders.
“Up until now we have only been able to deal with the dumping issue reactively by getting area cleanups carried out as council had no policy on the use of cameras.
“We hope that all of these initiatives will provide a long term resolution to dog fouling, littering and dumping issues in the Rosemount, Glenview and Lowrys Lane areas which remain one of the key areas of concern for local residents,” he added.
