NEW to this year’s City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival is a Singing and Song-writing Workshop by London based Swedish vocalist and composer, Emilia Martenssen, taking place  on Saturday 29 April at 2pm at the Nerve Centre, Derry.

Recently awarded the Vocalist of the Year at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards, Emilia Martensson is world renowned for her gentle expressive voice and distinctive compositions firmly rooted from within the folklore and countryside of her native Sweden.

The workshop is a two hour long session aimed at helping up and coming singer songwriters to discuss their approaches and influences when it comes to writing music and songs.

Emilia Martensson will share her experiences and her own methods as well as discuss in depth the sources of her inspiration.

Using songs from her last two albums she will explain how she successfully mixed music genres and influences from traditional folk music to jazz and alternative pop.

Andrea Campbell, festival and event organisers with Derry City and Strabane District Council who organise the City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival, says this workshop is very unique and the festival organisers are delighted to have Emilia involved in the festival.

She says the workshop is a fantastic opportunity for local songwriters to meet with Emilia, find out more about the techniques she uses, as well as get some feedback on their own music compositions.

“The City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival is not just about putting on live music across the city and district, it’s about reaching out to the entire community and getting everyone involved in music and helping us to showcase our local talent.

“The singing and song-writing workshop allows us to encourage up and coming talent to get involved in the jazz festival and to learn new skills and interact with musicians and artists.

“We are confident that the workshop will be a great success and would encourage anyone interested in taking part to register in advance with the Nerve Centre. Admission is just £5.”

Places can be booked in advance by contacting the Nerve Centre box office on https://nervecentre.ticketsolve.com/shows/873572380

The City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival is now in its 16th year and is set to take the city and district by musical storm when it brings live music to 70 venues from 27 April to 01 May.
