Bernard Ward’s striking pic of bonfire in Derry scoops top award.

A striking image of a Derry bonfire has won a prestigious photography prize.

The pic by Bernard Ward has been named best photo in Ireland for 2017.

The 34-year-old’s picture of the pallet pile was taken last year close to the flyover leading from the Bogside up to St Columba’s Church.

Now the well-known wedding and street photographer, who runs the www.DerryPhotos.com site, is headed for the Sony World Photography Awards ceremony in London.

Bernard from Elmvale, said landing the prize for his image Bogside Bonfire is a “dream come true”.

He added: “I enter the Sony World Photography awards every year and I have always dreamed of winning such a prestigious award.

“To be recognised on a world stage alongside some of the top photographers in the world is overwhelming.”

Congratulations Bernard and the best of luck for London.
