A SINN Fein councillor has called on violent dissident republicans to end the shootings after a man was injured in a second gun attack in the space of two days.

Kevin Campbell said the latest paramilitary style shooting was a “worrying development” for the city.

Detectives are investigating after a 48 year old man was injured in a dissident republican paramilitary style shooting in last night.

Police say the gun attack happened in the Glenowen Park area shortly after 9 pm on Wednesday, March 29.

The victim was shot in both legs in a laneway off Glenowen Park.

He was taken to the accident and emergency department at Altnagelvin Hospital for treatment.

Detective have appealed for anyone with information to contact them on the 101 number.

Or, information can be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Commenting on last night’s shooting, Sinn Fein councillor Kevin Campbell said:

“This is a very worrying development, it’s the second shooting in the city in a week.

“It’s important to repeat the message that there is no place for guns on the streets of our city.

“The community does not want this and the people behind these actions need to stop.

Last night’s shooting is the second in a few days.

On Monday evening, a 23 year old man was shot inside a bookmakers shop in the Creggan estate.

A 31-year-old man was arrested this morning in Derry under section 41 of the Terrorism Act in relation to Monday’s paramilitary style shooting.

He has been taken to the serious crime suite at Musgrave PSNI station in Belfast for questioning.
