Detectives at Strand Road investigating shooting in Derry’s Cornshell Fields area last night

DETECTIVES say a woman and two young children have escaped injury after shots were fired at a house in Derry under the cover of darkness last night.

The shooting incident happened at Cornshell Fields area in Shantallow just after 11 pm.

A number of people were in the house at the time but no one was injured in the cowardly attack.

The PSNI are keen to trace a white vehicle seen in the area at the time

Detective Constable Emma Marshall said: “Detectives are investigating and are particularly keen to trace a white vehicle observed driving in the area around the time of the incident.

“We are appealing to anyone who may have any information regarding this incident to contact detectives at Strand Road Police Station on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 1312 on 27/02/2017.

“Information can also be given anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

The shooting has been condemned by local Sinn Fein councillor and Foyle Assembly candidate Elisha McCallion.

The former Mayor of Derry and Strabane said: “There can be no place for the use of guns on our streets.

“I would call on anyone with information on this incident to bring it forward to the PSNI.”
