FULL TIME IN ALLIANZ LEAGUE: LATE MCGUCKIN GOAL HELPS DERRY BEAT KILDARE BY A POINT AT CELTIC PARK

Derry’s Emmett McGuckin score last gasp goal against Kildare

WHATEVER Damian Barton said at the end of the first period in the dressing room certainly had the desired effect.

And the game had a dramatic finish with Derry squeezing home a goal when Emmet McGuckin punched the ball into the net after a long ball up the pitch from Bell which helped to the Oak Leafers to a 1-18 to 1-17 win.

The goal came during three minutes of additional time in the Allianz League Division 2 encounter against Kildarea at Celtic Park (throw in 2 pm).

Trailing by five points at the interval with a scoreline of 0-08 to Kildaire’s 1-10, the Oak Leafers came out at Celtic Park and scored seven points without return in a wonderful spell of football.

And that man James Kielt was the centre of the second half action scoring point after point.

But then Kildare got back into the game again and it was point for point in a scintillating game of football in front of the home crowd in Derry.

Then it looked like Derry’s efforts were all in vain when successive points from Neil Flynn and Fergal Conway made it a two point game as the clocked tick down to the final whistle.

After squandering an earlier chance for a goal when Donnellan saved a shot from Niall Loughlin, it was Magherfelt’s McGuckin who sealed the win when he punched a goal into the Kildare net with seconds to go.

And it was nothing less than Derry deserved in the second half.

A great confidence boosting win against a tenacious Kildare side.
