RESIDENTS in Strathfoyle can look forward to improved play provision to the value of £500,000 later this year.
For work has begun on a new children’s play park as part of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Parks Management and Development.
Contractors MP Colman have been contracted to deliver this much needed project which is funded by Council with support from the Department for Communities and RiverRidge Recycling through the Landfill Communities Fund.
The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Hilary McClintock, said the new play provision will have a hugely positive impact on the lives of families in the area.
“The residents of Strathfoyle, stakeholders and Council have supported this project from its inception in meeting children and young people’s needs so I know they will be delighted to see work commencing,” she said.
“When completed, this play provision will be a beautiful open space for families to come together and children to play and I am looking forward to seeing that finally happen later this year.
“I’d like to congratulate the local community representatives and Council Officers who have worked so hard to move the initiative to this stage and acknowledge the additional funding from the Department for Communities and Landfill Communities Fund without which this project wouldn’t have been possible.”
RiverRidge Recycling is contributing to the Strathfoyle play environment project and a spokesperson for the Garvagh based company expressed their pleasure at being able to enhance community life in Strathfoyle.
“RiverRidge Recycling is delighted to be able to contribute to this project which will have a significant impact on the quality of life of the local community in Strathfoyle.
“The project will provide a safe area for children to play and have fun and we look forward to seeing the finished park later this year.”
Alex Duffy, Chairperson of Strathfoyle Community Association, paid tribute to all those who have been working to achieve better play facilities for the area.
“The people of Strathfoyle are excited that work is commencing,” he said. “We would like to thank DCSDC for all their hard work and commitment to the people of Strathfoyle.”
Enagh Youth Forum have taken an active role in campaigning for new facilities for families in the area and Community Activist with the group, Paul Hughes, added:
“It’s just brilliant to finally have diggers on site here in Strathfoyle. Local people led a very strong community campaign and we are all very excited and looking forward to the opening of the play park later in the summer. A massive well done to all local residents.”
