SDLP Foyle Candidate Mark H Durkan has joined teachers at the NASUWT rally as they carried out a day of strike action over pay, jobs and workload.

Mark H Durkan said: “These are people who have dedicated their lives to our children and helping them to achieve their full potential.

“They have been left high and dry by this Executive. The offer of a 0% increase for 2015/16 was nothing short of an insult. And a 1% offer for 2016/17 is unacceptable.

“The Executive have some neck to refuse the teacher’s basic and fair proposals.

“They have lavished millions on community halls and marching bands and have burned hundreds of millions in the RHI scandal.

“This Government have made clear that their priorities are boilers and bands.

“The SDLP will continue to support teachers and all those who enrich the educational experience of our children and young people.

“They can be assured that we’ve got their back.”
