SINN Féin President Gerry Adams was in Derry at the weekend where he addressed the annual conference of Sinn Féin Republican Youth.
Commenting on the visit today of British Prime Minister Theresa May to Dublin, Gerry Adams said there is an onus on the Taoiseach and Irish government to insist that the North is accorded special designated status within the EU after Brexit.
The Sinn Féin leader said: “Theresa May will be in Dublin on Monday to meet the Taoiseach.
“There is an onus on Mr. Kenny to tell the British Prime Minister that the only realistic outcome from Brexit is for the North to become a specially designated region within the EU.
“This would not affect the constitutional issue but it would ensure that there will be no EU land frontier on the island of Ireland.
“The Taoiseach must also insist that the British government, after almost two decades, agree to the full implementation of the Good Friday Agreement.
“The British Prime Ministers insistence that Brexit means Brexit is a threat to the entire architecture of the Agreement. Brexit is a hostile action.
“The British government stance will see the removal of the essential human rights elements of the Good Friday Agreement, which are the checks and balances needed to ensure equality, and prevent a repeat of past discriminatory policies.
“Brexit also ignores the democratic vote of the people of the North to Remain in the EU.”
