ARMAGH started the brightest in the opening 20 minutes in the first round of the Dr McKenna Cup.

But it was Derry who finished the strongest taking a two point lead in at half time in front of a home crowd of 2,281 at Owenbeg (throw-in 2 pm).

Niall Rowland puts Armagh ahead with a point from play and after eight minutes Anthony Duffy then goals from the next attack.

It was 20 mins before Derry opened their account with Niall Loughlin converting a 45.

Minutes later Armagh increased their lead with a free from Rory Grugan.

Points from Aidan McLaughlin and Emmet McGuckin cut Armagh’s lead to two points on 27 minutes.

Then there was great work from Benny Heron who set up Niall Loughlin for his second point.

Armagh’s Oisin Mac Íomhair pointed a free for Armagh but Derry responded with an Aidan McLaughlin goal.

And Niall Loughlin extended Derry’s lead to two from a free.
