EASTER 1916 – FROM THE GPO TO FREE DERRY – BOOK LAUNCH

danny-morrisonA new book Easter 1916-From the GPO to Free Derry will be launched in the Derry this Wednesday night.

It will commemorate the 100 Anniversary of the Easter Rising of 1916 and chart the Republican history in Derry up until the present day.

The book also contains stories and reflections of people from the city.

Project coordinator Tommy Carlin said:

“We are very pleased to have Danny Morrison as our guest speaker on Wednesday night.

“Danny as well as being synonymous with Republicanism across the island he is also an accomplished writer.

“Brian Lacey, author and historian, who will also speak on the night, has been the chief contributor to the book. Without his efforts this book would not have been this book.

“When we began researching the story of Derry’s involvement in the Easter Rising, the Tan War and the Civil War, it was not expected that this book would amount to over 80,000 words. But such was Derry’s contribution that it could be no less.

“Another prevailing thought was that the significance of the Rising on the most recent period of conflict, as well as the past 100 years, should also be remembered.

“Hence, we have the personal reflections of Derry republicans on the Rising and its importance for them.

“I would ask everyone to come along this Wednesday night to Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin Great James Street at 7 pm for this special launch,” added Mr Carlin.
