THE schoolboy who died in a tragic hit-and-run at the weekend is to be buried later today.

Reece Meenan, 13, was killed after he was struck by a car in Coleraine on Saturday evening.

He was due to turn 14 next Monday, December 5.

His Requiem Mass will take place at 11 am in Star Of The Sea Church in Portstewart followed by burial at Agherton Cemetery.

The funeral cortege will leave his home on the Strand Road in Coleraine at 10.15 am.

A death noticed placed by his grieving family said “Reece will be sadly missed and loved by everyone”.

He was out with a group of friends when he was knocked-down and killed by a hit-and-run driver.

Reece, from Coleraine , died after being struck by the white car on the Newbridge Road near his home.

A 23-year-old man was arrested 30 miles away on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He was released on police bail on Sunday evening.

Reece’s former football club chairman said “everyone at the club is absolutely heartbroken”.

Aaron Moffett, from Bertie Peacocks Youth, told Belfast Live: “He was a good lad, he was really liked by his peers and his managers.

“He was good at his football as well as many other sports.

“I wouldn’t say he was shy but he was a quiet young fella and just got on with the job he had to do.

“Having said that he liked to let his opinion known – he was quite knowledgeable about the game.

“We’re all absolutely devastated. We’ve never dealt with something like this before.

“His team, the 2002s, are especially hurt. They’re your football mates, yes, but it goes deeper than that. The friends you have in football tend to be the ones you hold onto.”

Reece was a pupil at Loreto College in the Co Derry town.
