DEPUTY First Minister Martin McGuinness and Health Minister Michelle O’Neill have visited the new cancer care centre in Derry’s Altnagelvin Hospital.

The £50 million cancer centre will open next week with state-of-the art technology.

Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney said:

“This is good news for the North West region and all those who have lobbied and campaigned hard to have the new Radiotherapy Unit located at Altnagelvin Hospital.

“This new facility will make a dramatic impact on the lives of cancer sufferers.

“It will mean that the vast majority of patients will be able to receive radiotherapy treatment within one hour travelling distance of their homes.

He added: “We need to build upon and develop the current all-Ireland health structures as we plan for the future.

“It has already been shown that cross-border co-operation works, as has been seen with the children’s cardiac services and now the new cancer centre here in Derry.”

The new centre will also be taking in patients from Donegal.
