Cllr Brian Tierney urges residents to be

SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney has called on the Minister for Infrastrcture to prioritise the delayed upgrade of the Buncrana Road widening scheme in the new Programme for Government.

He made the call after the news that for the second time in four days, the traffic lights at the Buncrana Road/ Racecourse Road junction are broken.

Councillor Tierney said: “For the second time in four days, the traffic lights are out at the Racecourse Road/Buncrana Road junction.

“This road is a gateway to the city, and it is used by many people on a regular basis as a link between Derry City and Donegal.

“The opening of the new recycling facility and other on-going developments in the area have further increased the traffic on the road.

“This disruption highlights the need for the planned Buncrana Road widening scheme.

“This project must be at the top of the list when it comes to the prioritisation of schemes in the new Programme for Government.

“We have been waiting years for progress on this scheme. I know that there was a small project of road improvements on this road over the summer, but it is simply not enough.

“If the upgrade does not happen very soon, these issues will continue to be a problem, and they will continue to cause disruption to local residents and commuters alike,” added the Derry councillor.
