daly-book-of-condolenceTHE Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, Alderman Hilary McClintock, met with family members of the former Bishop of Derry Dr Edward Daly at the weekend, to present Books of Condolence on behalf of the citizens of Derry and Strabane.

Bishop Daly’s two sisters Anne Gibson and Marion Ferguson were among the group who travelled to the city, where they joined Bishop Daly’s housekeeper Betty Doherty and Fr Eamon Graham, to remember the iconic local church leader and peacemaker, who sadly passed away last month.

Since then the public response has been phenomenal, with many people availing of the opportunity to sign the Book of Condolence online, while others turned out in person to sign the Books opened in the Guildhall.

Mayor McClintock, who opened the Book of Condolence last month, said the number of people who signed the Book was evidence of the special place Bishop Daly held in the hearts of many people from the city and district which had become his adopted home.

“Bishop Daly touched the lives of thousands of people and his kindness, compassion and love for this city and its people will be fondly remembered for many years to come,” she said.

“Bishop Daly’s family were moved by the number of heartfelt messages of sympathy and fond memories expressed by local people across the city and district.

“I would like to thank everyone who took the time to sign the Books of Condolence, I know his family were delighted to receive them.”
