36-year-old man to face court after male in his 30s seriously assaulted in Creggan on Sunday morning

A man is in hospital with life threatening head injuries after he was the victim of a vicious assault in Derry just over a week ago.

Andrew Gareth Smyth is being treated in Altnagelvin Hospital where he is valiantly clinging to life with the help of expert medical staff.

The 35-year-old was attacked in Magowan Park on Sunday, August 28

The accused is Martin Nelson who lives at 64 Magowan Park,

The 36-year-old is charged with  causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Mr Smyth.

Nelson is further accused of possessing an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence, namely grievous bodily harm, on the same date.

Appearing by video link from Maghaberry Prison, Nelson was refused bail by the district judge at Derry Magistrates’ Court today.
