A councillor and leading dissident republican in Derry has been charged with obstructing police.

Gary ‘Donzo’ Donnelly, an independent councillor on Derry City and Strabane District Council, was charged with obstructing a police officer in the execution of his duty on July 22, 2015.

The charge is relation to a search of his Creggan home linked to a police investigation into an INLA show of strength and a volley of shots fired over coffin of Peggy O’Hara, the mother of hunger strike Patsy O’Hara.

The case was listed before Derry Magistrates’ Court today.

Colr Donnelly (pictured) is 45 years old and his address was given as Iniscarn Road.

The case was adjourned as ‘Donzo’ Donnelly plans to fight the charge.

The case will now be contested on September 5.

Six other people were before the same court charged with taking part in an illegal dissident republican parade through Derry in April 2015.
