SINN FEIN DID NOT HAVE ANY KNOWLEDGE OF ALLEGED CONTACT WITH NAMA WITNESSES – MCGUINNESS

Martin_McGuinnessSINN Féin MLA Martin McGuinness has said Sinn Féin did not have any knowledge of any alleged contact with witnesses appearing before the Assembly’s NAMA inquiry.

The Irish News today reported that loyalist blogger Jamie Bryson was coached by Sinn Fein when he gave his evidence to a Stormont committee investigating the NAMA deal.

The newspaper said Sinn Fein chair of the committee Daithi McKay and one of his party workers, Thomas O’Hara, coached Jamie Bryson on how to present his evidence to the hearing via twitter messages.

This afternoon, Daithi McKay, a Sinn Fein North Antrim MLA, has now resigned.

Sinn Fein say that he has also been suspended from the party pending an internal investigation.

In a statement this afternoon, Foyle MLA Martin McGuinness said: “The allegations surrounding North Antrim MLA Daithí McKay are profoundly disturbing.

“If the allegations of inappropriate contact prove to be true, then Daithí McKay needs to seriously consider his position as an MLA.

“I want to state categorically that I had absolutely no knowledge of this exchange or contact.

“And having spoken to all relevant personnel in the Assembly I am now entirely satisfied that Sinn Féin had no knowledge of any such contact.”
