IT was a proud moment at the weekend as the Derry Clipper Race yacht completed the final miles of its epic global journey arriving into St Katharine Docks, London, to clinch second place in one of the biggest sporting challenges, the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.
The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Hilary McClintock greeted Skipper Daniel Smith and his crew as they reached dry land at, receiving a hero’s welcome at the race finish.
The team was pipped at the post by just four points by LMAX Exchange for the first place title, but following the massive festivities enjoyed by the crew on their visit to the city in July, the Derry team is undoubtedly second to none in the eyes of the city.
Speaking after their arrival, Ald. McClintock praised the efforts of Daniel and his team saying their performance had been exceptional throughout the race. “It was an emotional moment watching the fleet making its way into London in a blaze of colour on Saturday.
“It has been such an adventure for the crew and they have certainly done the city proud throughout the race.
“Daniel and his team have been fantastic ambassadors for the city and we had the opportunity to show our appreciation during the Foyle Maritime Festival which was such a success for the city in July, attended by 160,000 people.
“I just want to thank them again on behalf of all our citizens for their stoic efforts throughout the Race, and for allowing us to share in the excitement and emotion of their journey.”
Thousands turned out to watch the yachts arrive for the fantastic finale in London, where they first embarked on their journey 11 months ago.
For the non-professional crew on board the 12 ocean racing yachts, the return to London marked the end of what has been an amazing and life-changing challenge.
The Derry team secured seven podium finishes throughout the course of the gruelling 40,000 nautical mile race around the world – with four race wins and three second places, including a second place on arrival at their home port earlier this month.
The competition between Derry and rivals LMAX Exchange as they vied for pole position had local followers on the edge of their seats in the final stages of the race, particularly during their battle across the Atlantic from New York to Derry where they were greeted by friends and family.
In addition to attending the Race Finish and prize-giving ceremony over the weekend, the Mayor was a special guest at a celebratory reception hosted by the GREAT Britain campaign, attended by Clipper Race Founder and Chairman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Clipper Race CEO William Ward and an extended business network.
