MCGLONE MEETS BANK OF IRELAND CHIEFS OVER BRANCH CLOSURES

Bank of Ireland 1SDLP Mid-Ulster MLA Patsy McGlone has met with senior Bank of Ireland representatives to discuss their decision to close a number of rural branches across the North.

Bank of Ireland announced the closure of eight branches last week.

Two Co Derry branches are to close – Draperstown and Maghera.

The Castlederg branch in Tyrone is also to shut.

Said Patsy McGlone: “Today I had a very frank discussion with senior representatives from the Bank of Ireland on the extremely detrimental effects that the closure of these branches will have on rural communities.

“Many people are under the impression that banks are retreating from rural areas and these closures are fuelling speculation of further closures to come.

“Closing branches in rural areas poses significant difficulties for communities who are already made to feel increasingly isolated.

“This is particularly true for older people who are unable to use online banking and rely on face to face service for secure financial assistance.

“The news also came as a bitter blow for staff but I have been assured that no one will face forced redundancy and every member of staff will be protected by the protocols agreed between the Bank of Ireland and trade unions.

“In many cases the functions of the branches facing closure have been transferred to the local Post Office which is a welcome alternative to the complete withdrawal of services.

“Bank of Ireland must now assure their customers that all the services previously provided by their own staff will still be available in Post Offices where this has happened.

“Those at the top must recognise the severe impact closures have on rural communities and so we will be advising them against any further closures in the future,” he added.
